Description
A quick, healthy, and kid-approved green smoothie that hides spinach under the sweetness of apples and bananas. Perfect for busy school mornings, this recipe takes only 5 minutes to make and provides sustained energy.
Ingredients
- 1 large green apple (Granny Smith preferred), cored and chopped (approx. 200g)
- 1 cup fresh baby spinach, packed (approx. 30g)
- 1 medium banana, frozen (approx. 120g)
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla)
- 3/4 cup milk (dairy, almond, oat, or soy)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional, to taste)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning)
Instructions
- Wash the apple and spinach. Core the apple and chop it into small chunks. Peel the banana and break it in half. If using fresh banana, freeze it until solid.
- Pour the milk into the blender first to help the blades spin freely.
- Add the yogurt, spinach, and chia seeds to the blender.
- Place the frozen banana and chopped apple on top of the mixture.
- Blend on low speed to break up the fruit, then gradually increase to high speed. Blend for 60-90 seconds until completely smooth with no green flecks.
- Taste the smoothie. Adjust sweetness with honey or tartness with lemon juice if needed. Add more milk if too thick, or ice if too thin.
- Pour immediately into glasses and serve fresh.
Notes
[‘Frozen fruit is essential for a thick, creamy texture without watering it down with ice.’, ‘The spinach flavor is completely masked by the apple and banana; do not reduce the amount of spinach.’, ‘To prevent the smoothie from turning brown due to oxidation, add a splash of lemon juice.’, ‘For meal prep, chop apples and freeze them in bags. In the morning, just dump the bag into the blender with liquid and yogurt.’, ‘Smoothies are best consumed immediately. If stored, they will separate and turn brownish; stir well and add a splash of milk before drinking.’]
