Description
A warm, fragrant, and simple spiced apple cider that brings cozy autumn vibes to early fall. Made with real spices and fresh fruit, this drink is customizable for both kids and adults.
Ingredients
Scale
- 64 ounces (2 liters) 100% pure apple juice or fresh-pressed cider
- 1–2 cups water
- 1 large orange, sliced into rounds or wedges
- 3 large cinnamon sticks
- 8–10 whole cloves
- 2 star anise
- 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1 vanilla bean (split and scraped) or 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Optional: 1-inch piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced
- Optional: 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
- Optional: 1-2 ounces bourbon or rum per serving
Instructions
- Wash the orange thoroughly and slice it into rounds or wedges. Peel and slice fresh ginger if using. Measure out all spices.
- Pour the apple juice and water into a large stockpot. Add the sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, peppercorns, and ginger.
- Stir the mixture and bring it to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce heat to low to maintain a slow, lazy simmer. Simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes.
- Taste the cider. Adjust strength by simmering longer for more spice or adding water if too strong. Add lemon juice if too sweet.
- Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract or scrape in vanilla bean seeds.
- Strain through a fine-mesh sieve if desired, or serve with spices removed. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or apple slice.
- Serve hot. For adults, add bourbon or rum to the mug before pouring.
Notes
Use whole spices only to avoid a gritty texture. Do not boil the orange peel too long to prevent bitterness. The cider tastes better the next day as spices meld. Can be made in a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
